Humanoid robots just entered the operating room

Two teleoperated humanoid robots have completed live surgery for the first time.


Researchers at UC San Diego reported the milestone in Nature on July 8, 2026. In one procedure, a humanoid assisted a surgeon during gallbladder removal. In another, two humanoid robots operated together in the field with no human hands.


The breakthrough is not that a robot performed surgery.


Surgical robots have been in operating rooms for more than two decades. The real story is that a general-purpose humanoid, equipped with custom adapters and standard surgical instruments, was able to do the job.


Why does that matter?


Because access matters.


Traditional robotic systems are expensive, large, and tied to specialized operating rooms. Humanoid robots could eventually be deployed in smaller hospitals, rural centers, military settings, or temporary surgical facilities.


This was not autonomous surgery.


A surgeon directed every movement. The study involved only two animal procedures, and the technology remains far from routine clinical use.


The most immediate role is likely surgical assistance. Holding a camera. Retracting tissue. Passing instruments.


Autonomy, if it arrives, will come one task at a time.


The next era of surgical robotics may not belong to a bigger machine.


It may belong to one that can walk into the operating room.
