Da Vinci 5 Opens the Door to Robotic Heart Surgery

Cardiac surgery has always been the hardest challenge for surgical robotics.


A valve repair depends on something robots still struggle to reproduce: touch. Surgeons feel tissue tension, resistance, and the difference between a secure stitch and a dangerous one.


That is why cardiac surgery lagged behind urology and gynecology.


In January, the FDA cleared Intuitive Surgical’s da Vinci 5 for nine cardiac procedures, including mitral valve repair, tricuspid repair, and left atrial appendage closure.


The clearance expands robotic surgery into some of the most important areas of heart surgery. Many of these procedures are still performed through a sternotomy, while robotic approaches aim to achieve the same repair through smaller incisions.


The challenge is still touch


The new cardiac procedures do not yet include Force Feedback technology.


Surgeons can see tissue movement but cannot directly feel tension or resistance. In cardiac surgery, where anatomy is small and constantly moving, that limitation remains significant.


Intuitive is still developing haptic technology for future cardiac applications.


A careful rollout


The adoption will be gradual. Intuitive plans to start with selected US hospitals in 2026, focusing on training before wider expansion.


Cardiac robotics is no longer a future idea. But success will depend on more than the robot itself. It will depend on outcomes, training, and whether technology can eventually restore the missing sense in robotic surgery: touch.


Why It Matters


Da Vinci 5 does not solve every challenge in robotic heart surgery, but it moves cardiac procedures from the margins of surgical robotics toward the mainstream.
